Researchers have found that the stress hormone cortisol may be the strongest predictor of how quickly a person ages biologically. The study, published in Science Advances, analyzed 22 different hormones in participants ranging from 20 to 73 years old. Cortisol alone emerged as the most powerful predictor of biological age across all age groups. When cortisol levels doubled, biological age increased roughly 1.5 times faster than chronological age, researchers reported.

Cortisol is often called the stress hormone, but it plays a role in waking up, responding to challenges, regulating blood sugar, and repairing tissue. Problems arise when cortisol stays elevated for long periods. Chronically high cortisol has been linked to inflammation, metabolic problems, and shortened telomeres, which are markers of cellular aging. The new study adds to growing evidence that managing stress is important for healthy aging.

To help control cortisol levels naturally, researchers and health experts recommend several strategies. Morning sunlight exposure helps set the body’s internal clock, telling it when to raise and lower cortisol throughout the day. Physical activity is important, but the body needs recovery time. Active recovery days with walking, stretching, or gentle yoga, especially outdoors, can lower cortisol and reduce heart rate. Magnesium, found in leafy greens, nuts, and seeds, supports the body’s stress response system. A high-quality magnesium supplement taken in the evening may promote relaxation. Slow, mindful breathing or meditation for 10 minutes can calm the nervous system and reduce cortisol output. Balanced meals with protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates help keep blood sugar stable, which in turn helps keep cortisol steady.

The study’s findings suggest that biological age is not determined solely by DNA but also by how the body responds to daily stress. While cortisol is necessary for survival, managing it through lifestyle choices could be a powerful way to support healthy aging.
